Grants & Services
Full Grants
Full grants will be
offered to departments selected by the Penny Harris
Foundation Board of Directors. A full grant will entail
the donation of a suitable dog,
all deployment equipment, and a 12 week basic
handler school. Upon acceptance of a department for a
full grant the foundation will set up a web site page
specific to that department. This page will have a
donate button. All donations made here will go directly
to your program, up to the set amount of $15,000. All
money over that amount will be used by the foundation
for its non profit programs. We will advertise our
involvement and seek out donations in your community for
YOUR program. If community donations fall short we will
make up the difference
from Foundation funds. Upon acceptance of your
application we will assign you a space in the next
available training class.
Partial Grants
Some departments have money to put toward a police
canine program. For instance, there are programs such as
the Milk Bone Canine Heroes Program that offer $5,000.
Cash grants toward the implementation of a canine
program. In this situation the department still has to
deal with choosing a suitable dog, purchasing deployment
equipment and finding competent training. The Penny
Harris Foundation can address these issues for you and
make up the financial shortfall that comes with these
additional considerations. Since we do not have a profit
motive our sole consideration is to provide you with the
best possible canine team we can produce.
Here's how to apply
Paid Training
Some departments can afford the full $15,000 price tag
that comes with the implementation of a Public Safety
Canine Unit. These departments can go where ever they
choose for their dog, equipment, and training. Under
most vendor based programs the training consists of an
abbreviated (often 4 weeks or less) handler training
course. It is impossible to teach a police officer to be
a competent handler in 4 weeks. We offer a more
comprehensive course that ultimately will lower the
civil liability of the agency starting or expanding a
program. Because the Penny Harris Foundation does not
operate on a for profit system we can offer the student
a 12 week school for the same price as an abbreviated
school. We do not feel that public safety departments
who can afford to pay for their training should be
excluded from quality dogs, training and equipment or
the ongoing support that the Penny Harris Foundation
provides. We do believe that abbreviated handler's
courses are dangerous to handlers, dogs, officers and
civilians. We strongly encourage all departments, where
ever they may seek out training, to ensure a full 8 to
12 week course of instruction before they deploy their
team on the street. We will gladly supply dogs,
training, and equipment to departments who can afford
the full cost for this service. All proceeds earned will
go into our non profit programs.
Advanced training
The
Penny Harris Foundation Trainers and advisors represent
the most knowledgeable and influential canine experts in
the world. We will schedule advanced training courses
using these assets on a regular basis. Most of this
training will have a fee attached in order to raise
funds for foundation programs. However at each training
course a number of grants will be offered to allow
canine handlers in need an opportunity to attend this
training.
In-Service & Remedial Training
The
foundation offers regular in-service training on a
by-weekly basis for a total of 16 hours of detector dog
training and 16 hours of patrol dog training per month.
In-service training is open to all operational public
safety canine units free of charge. If you plan on
attending a session please RSVP so that we can ensure we
have enough trainers to assist.
Remedial training can take place anytime you have a
need. We are available to solve problems or evaluate
current performance with an eye toward improvement. We
are here to assist you in any way we can.
There is no charge for remedial training. Simply contact
us via E-mail or phone and we can help!
